Explore the 1940 US Census on MyHeritage ? Family Tree

From 2 April 2012 MyHeritage will be offering the images and a growing searchable name index of the 1940 US Census free of charge, following the release of the census by the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States (NARA). The census will be available in 38 languages, searchable even on-the-go via mobile, with automatic matching to family trees.

To coincide with the release of the census MyHeritage will be launching its SuperSearch search engine. MyHeritage will automatically match the 1940 Census records as they are being added with the millions of family trees built by users on MyHeritage, notifying them about relevant results and eliminating the need for time-consuming and repeated manual searches. Users will be able to approve or dismiss any matches before they are added to their tree. This could be a particularly useful aid given that the 1940 Census records will be added gradually, so users won?t need to revisit the census and search again as new content is added.

The MyHeritage 1940 Census index will be independent from the 1940 Census Community Project being coordinated by Archives.com, FamilySearch and findmypast.com, and from the Ancestry.com index. MyHeritage aims to add value by publishing data from states not yet available elsewhere and will use a specialist historical transcription company to develop the index and make it searchable, pledging a 98% or higher degree of accuracy.

MyHeritage will also provide the 1940 US Census for free on its other family history sites at www.worldvitalrecords.com/1940census and www.familylink.com/1940census.
In addition, users will be able to search the 1940 Census on-the-go with a new version of the MyHeritage mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android, to be launched in the first week of April.

This is the most recent US census to be made publicly available (after a 72-year closure period) and is the largest and most comprehensive one ever to be published. It will provide a window into the lives of those who survived the Great Depression, and those who immigrated to America to flee from the Nazis in World War II. Census information includes detailed family information, such as names, ages, addresses, occupation, race, marital status, birthplace, citizenship, home ownership and the relationship of each person in the household.? Several new and interesting questions appear in the 1940 US Census for the first time identifying where the individual was living five years before (in 1935), information about wages and also educational attainment. Five percent of the population was asked supplementary questions including birthplace of parents, native language, usual occupation, and for women only ? whether they?d been married more than once, how old they were when they were first married and the number of children they gave birth to.

Blog interview no.321 with writer Cynthia Haggard ? Morgen ...

Welcome to the three hundred and twenty-first of my blog interviews with novelists, poets, short story authors, biographers, agents, publishers and more. Today?s is with historical novelist Cynthia Haggard. A list of interviewees (blogged and scheduled) can be found here. If you like what you read, please do go and investigate further.

Morgen: Hello, Cynthia. Please tell us something about yourself, where you?re based, and how you came to be a writer.

Cynthia: I?ve had four careers: violinist, cognitive scientist, medical writer and novelist. I was born and raised in the UK, but have been living in the US for 30 years. I currently live in Washington DC. I came to novel writing eight years ago, when I was taking a creative writing course to improve my prose style as I made the adjustment from being an academic to a medical writer. On the first day of the Intro to Novel class, the Stegner fellow who was teaching us asked for the first five pages of our new novel. I gulped, but ever the good student complied. That is how Thwarted Queen began in the Fall of 2004.

Morgen: Oh wow. It?s funny how we fall into things. I got the bug when I went to a college?s creative writing workshop because I?d brushed up on my languages and computer skills. It was very much a case of ?OK, what?s next?? and that?s been ?it? ever since. :) What genre do you generally write and have you considered other genres?

Cynthia: I write historical fiction, because I have this annoying tendency to float around in the past. I don?t think I could write any other kind of genre. Fortunately, historical fiction is a large umbrella, which includes romance, mystery, fantasy and thriller.

Morgen: It does and it?s all very popular. What have you had published to-date?

Cynthia: I published my first novel Thwarted Queen in October 2011 as an e-book. TQ is also available as a 4 e-volume set (The Bride Price, One Seed Sown, The Gilded Cage, Two Murders Reaped) and as a 3 volume paperback set (Rose of Raby, The Gilded Cage, Two Murders Reaped). All of these versions are available on Amazon.

Morgen: Have you had any rejections? If so, how do you deal with them?

Cynthia: During 2010, I sent out the manuscript of TQ to 45 agents. Though I got some nibbles, ultimately it was rejected. Like everyone else, I don?t like have my work rejected. However, I also see it as an opportunity to learn. My problem with the agent system as it currently stands is that when agents pass on something ? even if they?ve demanded an exclusive that lingers on for three months ? they don?t feel obliged to give you feedback. In my book, that is worse than a waste of time. Subsequently, I went to a couple of writer?s conferences in the spring of 2011 (Unicorn and Maryland) and paid extra to talk one-on-one with professional agents and editors. Finally, I learned what I needed to know. Armed with this knowledge I sat down and worked on it until it was right. So my attitude to rejection is to try and use it as an opportunity to learn.

Morgen: The trouble with sending work anywhere is that there is invariably one person doing two people?s jobs so even a tick-box reply is time-consuming with the amount of submissions they get, although I do think that?s the least they should do. Not replying at all is mean. I presume therefore that you don?t currently have an agent? Do you think they?re vital to an author?s success?

Cynthia: No, not currently. I obtained an agent for a short time in 2010, and didn?t find her particularly helpful. Are agents vital to an author?s success? That depends on the agent and where the author is in their career. For an emerging writer like me, the most useful thing an agent could do (apart from getting good contracts) would be to help manage my career.

Morgen: I certainly think when you get a good one that they do earn their keep. You mentioned Amazon earlier, are your books available as eBooks? Were you involved in that process at all? Do you read eBooks or is it paper all the way?

Cynthia: My books are available as eBooks. I was heavily involved. I created the cover. I did the interior design. I uploaded it onto Amazon. I did hire a professional editor to copyedit the manuscript. And I hired a professional to transform my files into MOBI and Epub. My preference is to read fiction as an e-book, and non-fiction in paperback. This is because when I?m reading non-fiction, it is typically a ?how-to? book and I need to flip back and forth. For fiction, I prefer e-format because it prevents me from cheating and reading the end!

Morgen: :) How much of the marketing do you?

Cynthia: I do all the marketing, and have given myself the goal this year of becoming thoroughly acquainted with it.

Morgen: It can be a slow process. You obvious had a lot of input into your books and you mentioned the covers, how important do you think they (and the titles) are?

Cynthia: I think that titles and covers are tremendously important, and yes I had full control over their design. I used various French chateaux as backdrops, both because the culture of my protagonist Cecylee Neville was so heavily French-identified, and also because I wanted to give these books an almost fairy-tale like quality. After all, many of the illustrations for Fairy Tales show people dressed in the garb of the 1400s, when Cecylee was alive.

Morgen: What are you working on at the moment / next?

Cynthia: I am working on another family saga called Family Splinters. Set in 1920s Washington DC and Berlin Germany, it is a tale of identity, forbidden love and family secrets. I hope it will be published next year, 2013.

Morgen: Do you manage to write every day? Do you ever suffer from writer?s block?

Cynthia: I try very hard to write every day, and don?t always succeed. However, I have got into the habit of reserving my mornings for writing as it is my best time of day. Like everyone else, I suffer from writer?s block. But I don?t let it ruin my life. If I get stumped, I simply put the MSS down and work on something else. Then I return to it the next day, knowing that that wonderful machine we have in the brain called the mind, will be working away at it underground while I get on with other things.

Morgen: That?s the trick ? have some variety and your brain will keep fresh. Do you plot your stories or do you just get an idea and run with it?

Cynthia: I do a bit of both. I get an idea and start out doing research. Then I just write for a while. When I?ve got to the part of the novel which I think of as the end of Act I, I stop and organize. That way I can have the best of both worlds: I can have the magic of writing on inspiration, without writing pages of stuff I don?t need. I very rarely write something I don?t re-use.

Morgen: That?s a very good plan. My heart sinks when I hear / read of writers who have deleted x,000s of words because they didn?t think it worked. That?s what copy / paste or File / Save As is for. :) Do you have a method for creating your characters, their names and what do you think makes them believable?

Cynthia: Yes. I spend a lot of time getting to know them. This is why it takes me some time to write a novel, because I like to take the time and trouble to get to know my characters. I create documents for them, in which I interview them. After the interview, I write in a sort of free-form fashion trying to get their voice.

Morgen: That sounds like fun. :) I think the characters are the most important aspect of a book ? however good a plot is if we don?t like the characters (the ones we?re supposed to like anyway), we?re bound to lose interest in what?s happening around them. Do you write any non-fiction, poetry or short stories?

Cynthia: I?ve written a lot of non-fiction in my life as an academic and medical writer. I love writing poetry, and have even tried my hand at the occasional short story.

Morgen: I love short stories. :) Do you do a lot of editing or do you find that as time goes on your writing is more fully-formed?

Cynthia: I always edit as I go along, working scene by scene. In the earlier drafts, I don?t worry much about copy-editing because I?m doing all the structural editing. By the fifth draft, I?m polishing the text.

Morgen: I do about four or five drafts (usually no more than that). Do you have to do much research?

Cynthia: As a historical novelist, I have to do a tremendous amount of research. Then I have to endure throwing most of it away so that the novel doesn?t read like a history book and bore the reader!

Morgen: I read only today in a back-copy of a writing magazine where a top historical author was criticised for overusing his research. I guess it?s very tempting to impress but it often backfires. What point of view do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?

Cynthia: In my experience, the material dictates POV. Generally speaking, I don?t care for first person present as I find it pallid and unemotional. There is one exception to this, when writing in the voice of a child. In my novels, I tend to write in close third, because I like to have more than one POV. In Thwarted Queen, this POV issue was quite a challenge because it is a very long novel, mostly about one person. In the end I split it into four books, using different POVs for each book. I wrote the first book of the novel, The Bride Price, in first person present, to capture the freshness of a nine-year-old girl. I wrote the second book, One Seed Sown in first person past, to convey the more mature voice of a young woman in her twenties. The third book, The Gilded Cage, is the story of Richard of York?s political career (Richard of York was Cecylee?s husband) and the opening salvos of the Wars of the Roses. To capture the complexity of the material, and the different voices used to tell it, I wrote that book in third person. The fourth book, Two Murders Reaped, is the story of the last 35 years of Cecylee?s life after the death of her husband, I wrote that in first person past.

Morgen: What?s your favourite / least favourite aspect of your writing life? Has anything surprised you?

Cynthia: I love writing. And I don?t mind marketing or thinking like a business person. I guess this is because I?ve been running my own business for the past five years. It surprises me that I find it possible to go from being an artist to being a business person.

Morgen: :) What advice would you give aspiring writers?

Cynthia: Understand that this is an endeavor that takes a lot of work, and set about learning how to do it as systematically as you can. You don?t have to go for an expensive MFA to learn how to write. On the other hand, you do need to develop a community of people who will read your work. Feedback is the most precious commodity in a writer?s life, and it becomes in increasingly short supply as a writer becomes more advanced at writing. So even if you are a recluse like me, you still need to think about how you are going to find that valuable feedback that all writers need in order to grow and develop at their craft. The saddest thing is to see talented writers wither because they aren?t given enough time to write their novels and they aren?t given the feedback that they need.

Morgen: I would definitely agree about feedback. I run two writing groups and belong to three others and I?m often alerted to things in my writing that had not occurred to me. Is there a word, phrase or quote you like?

Cynthia: ?Once upon a time there lived in Berlin, Germany, a man called Albinus. He was rich, respectable, happy; one day he abandoned his wife for the sake of a youthful mistress; he loved; was not loved; and his life ended in disaster.? This is the whole of the story and we might have left it at that had there not been profit and pleasure in the telling; and although there is plenty of space on a gravestone to contain, bound in moss, the abridged version of a man?s life, detail is always welcome.?
? Vladimir Nabokov, Laughter in the Dark

Morgen: I like that. What do you do when you?re not writing?

Cynthia: I love to dance, I?ll dance to anything. I love music, and play violin and piano. I walk a lot (I don?t have a car and live in the city). I enjoy hiking. And I go to my favorite yoga studio 3-4 times a week.

Morgen: And you find time to write? :) Are there any writing-related websites and/or books that you find useful? (please include links where you can)

Cynthia: For the craft of writing, I recommend James N. Frey?s books and a series of books on craft put out by Writer?s Digest.

For marketing books, you can?t do any better than Dan Poynter?s volume.

Morgen: Where can we find out about you and your work?

Cynthia: To find out more my novels, please visit http://spunstories.com.

Morgen: Thank you, Cynthia.

I then invited Cynthia to include an excerpt of her writing and this is from ?Two Murder?s Reaped?:

I glared. ?I would have ensured they had your best interests at heart.?

There was silence.

I had said everything I could. Was there any way of annulling this ridiculous marriage?

But Edward said nothing.

?It is wholly inappropriate,? I remarked, staring at his downcast eyes and shut-in face, ?for a monarch to marry his own subject where no honor or lands can be gained by it. A rich man marries his maid only for a little easy pleasure. In such marriages, folk admire the maid?s good fortune, but think her master lacks judgment. And in this matter, there is no difference so great between any master and maid in this land as between you and this widow.?

I paused.

Edward did not react.

?And the fact that she is a widow makes everything much worse.?

Edward lifted his chin and stared at me.

I gazed back. There was a long silence. Finally I snapped, ?This marriage is a blemish and a disparagement to the majesty of a prince!?

I swept out.

Born and raised in Surrey, England, CYNTHIA SALLY HAGGARD has lived in the United States for twenty-nine years. She has had four careers: violinist, cognitive scientist, medical writer and novelist. Yes, she is related to H. Rider Haggard, the author of SHE and KING SOLOMONS?S MINES. (H. Rider Haggard was a younger brother of the author?s great-grandfather.) Cynthia Sally Haggard is a member of the Historical Novel Society. You can visit her website at: http://spunstories.com.

If you are reading this and you write, in whatever genre, and are thinking ?ooh, I?d like to do this? then you can? just email me and I?ll send you the questions. You complete them, I tweak them where appropriate (if necessary to reflect the blog ?clean and light? rating) and then they get posted. When that?s done, I email you with the link so you can share it with your corner of the literary world. And if you have a writing-related blog / podcast and would like to interview me? let me know. :) You can sign up to receive these blog posts daily or weekly so you don?t miss anything? and follow me on Twitter?where each new posting is automatically announced. You can also read / download my eBooks and free eShorts at Smashwords, Sony Reader Store, Barnes & Noble, iTunes Bookstore and Kobo. And I have a new forum at http://morgenbailey.freeforums.org.

Unfortunately, as I post an interview a day (amongst other things) I can?t review books but I have a feature called ?Short Story Saturdays? where I review stories of up to 2,500 words. Alternatively if you have a short story or self-contained novel extract / short chapter (ideally up to 1000 words) that you?d like critiqued and don?t mind me reading it / talking about and critiquing it (I send you the transcription afterwards so you can use the comments or ignore them) :) on my ?Bailey?s Writing Tips? podcast,?then do email me. They are weekly episodes, usually released Monday mornings UK time, interweaving the recordings between the red pen sessions with the hints & tips episodes. I am now also looking for flash fiction (<1000 words) for Flash Fiction Fridays and poetry for Post-weekend?Poetry.

eriteatteri.com ? Automotive Insurance Details

Automotive Insurance Details
Automotive insurance is nothing but insurance of the automobiles or vehicles. Our automobiles or vehicles can be insured against any mishaps just like our lives can be insured against any risks. Against any accident or mishaps, we can insured the life of our bikes, trucks, buses, cars, vans, boats, and others for the sake of protection against the probable losses. There is guarantee that the owner of the insured vehicle will get a lump sum payment for any damages done to his vehicle due to accidents or any other mishaps.

Every state or country has different automotive insurance rules and guidelines. So also these rules are different from insurance company to insurance company. Once the decision is made about the insurance company you want to use, be sure to carefully read the terms and conditions properly, including the fine print. There may be stricter guidelines and you don?t want to end up being in a messy situation when your vehicle gets destroyed and you need to get the money from the insurance company. Do your homework very well in term of inquiry prior to signing the insurance paperwork. Furthermore, be sure to save all the automobile paperwork together in a place easy to find. It is normal that there are going to be a whole lot of documentation for your automobile and you would be expected to produce these vehicle documents to make a claim.

There are many Auto car insurance companies that know the value of your precious newly bought vehicles. But you would need to get the basic cleared before going ahead and get auto car insurance policy. You can consult your financial advisor about the pros and cons of getting an automobile insurance. The pros are definitely more in taking up such insurance. The insurance company you are signing up with determines the cons. Make sure the company is reliable and has a good reputation for settling claims. Do your research of the company?s background on the internet or ask around from people about the company?s reputation.

Once the favourable insurance company is decided, you can now sit down with one of their managers and work out the detailed premium plans. The premium payment can be done to fit your budget to be able to pay. Take advantage of this as much as possible and come up with achievable plan. Missing of a payment can lead to huge interest accumulation. Therefore, afford delinquency by choosing achievable payment plans that is affordable to you.

Moreover, several automobile insurance companies provide online auto car insurance quotes. Remember, you can get a quote by submitting just one form to give you the one best quote retrieved from different insurance sites and this will eliminate the problem of going to several websites to request quotes from each insurance company separately. . How much time and money you would save through this way cannot be overstated. Use the form on this site to get the one best quote retrieved from auto car insurance quotes from across several sites.

When purchasing your vehicle, you spent a lot of money, time and energy in the process. So, it makes a lot of sense to make sure you provide enough insurance to cover any accidents or risk that may happen to this car. Good coverage such as buying enough insurance for your vehicle will always be good idea later on in future.

These are different types of insurance coverage you should be ready to take up: Liability, Personal Injury, comprehensive and collision, uninsured motorist and towing and rental.

Liabilities affecting the third party due to accident are covered by liability insurance option. The aspect of the insurance that covers the medical bill and the injury is the personal injury option. Comprehensive and collision is for paying for damages or theft of the vehicle, while uninsured motorist take care of any damages or injury caused by uninsured or underinsured motorist.

Adding towing and rental option to your insurance is a good idea. When accident happens, towing and rental part of your policy will reimburse you for towing and rental of a car to use.

President Obama: Trayvon Martin Shooting 'A Tragedy'

WASHINGTON (WUSA/CBS) -- CBS News' Mark Knoller reports that President Obama has made his first public comment about the Trayvon Martin shooting.

A reporter asked him about the shooting death of the unarmed Florida 17-year-old during an announcement about his nomination of Jim Yong Kim to be president of the World Bank.

The reporter asked, "Mr. President, may I ask you about this current case in Florida, very controversial, allegations of lingering racism within our society -- the so-called 'do not' -- I'm sorry -- 'Stand Your Ground law' and the justice in that? Can you comment on the Trayvon Martin case, sir?"

The President replied:

"Obviously this is a tragedy. I can only imagine what these parents are going through. And when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids, and I think every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this, and that everybody pulls together, federal state and local to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened.?

So I'm glad that not only is the justice dept is looking into it, I understand now the government of the state of Florida has
formed a task force to investigate what's taken place.?

I think all of us need to do some soul searching to figure out how this happened, and that means we examine the laws, context of what happened, as well as the specifics of the incident, but my main message is to the parents of Trayvon Martin. You know,
if I had a son he would look like Trayvon, and you know, I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans are going to take this with the seriousness it deserves and that we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

Locally, a vigil will be held Friday night, and earlier today, a group of people gathered for "Hoodies on the Hill," a vigil at the Capitol.

Sony Xperia S headed to Canada on Rogers

Xperia S

Looks like Sony's new Xperia S will be arriving on North American shores in the near future, as Sony Mobile Canada has revealed that its high-end phone for early 2012 will be hitting the Rogers network. No release or pricing info is available just yet -- Sony just says the Rogers Xperia S is "coming soon."

The Xperia S is out now in Europe, and we recently got our hands on the finished article. While we were disappointed to see a flagship smartphone launching in Spring 2012 with Gingerbread, we were impressed with the Xperia S's build quality, HD Reality Display screen and 12MP EXMOR R camera. The phone's due an update to Ice Cream Sandwich during Q2, though, so depending on when Rogers launches it, Canadians may find their version comes pre-loaded with the latest version of Android.

For more on the Xperia S, check out our full review.

Web traffic is flowers and football for February

Web traffic is flowers and football for February

Reston, Va. ? Spurred by Valentine?s Day, millions of Americans scoured the web for flowers, gifts and greetings in February, according to new figures from comScore.

The category grew 28 percent for the month to 29.3 million visitors, led by ProFlowers.com, which spiked 394 percent to 5.4 million visitors.

Super Bowl XLVI also helped drive traffic to websites promoted by advertisers, particularly related to autos. More than 27 million people visited an auto manufacturer site, up 17 percent from January, with Toyota, Honda and General Motors leading the way.

?Valentine?s Day and the Super Bowl seemed to be the driving forces behind much of the online activity in February as Americans browsed romantic gifts and checked out Super Bowl advertisers? websites, especially auto makers,? said Jeff Hackett, executive vice president of comScore. ?In addition, tax sites posted another month of gains as the filing deadline drew nearer.?

This article was also published in New England Tech Wire.

Allergies Ahead of Schedule in Eastern United States - Health News ...

THURSDAY, March 22 (HealthDay News) ? The unusually warm spring weather in New York and other parts of the eastern United States has trees and other plants blooming much earlier than normal, which could mean a long and intense allergy season.

Donald Leopold, chair of the environmental and forest biology department at State University of New York?s College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, said maples, willows, aspens, poplars and other woody plant species that bloom in early spring are major contributors of wind-dispersed pollen that causes allergic reactions.

Leopold is an expert in woody and herbaceous native and non-native plants.

On SUNY?s campus recently, Leopold saw that an American elm was already producing pollen, a red maple was covered with male and female flowers, a row of spicebush shrubs had flowers of various sizes, and a native willow had bloomed early.

This is the first time in his 27 years at the college that he has seen these species bloom on campus before April 1, Leopold said in a university news release.

In short, all the signs point to an extended and severe allergy season.

With temperatures expected to reach the 80s in Syracuse, ?things are really going to pop this week,? he said.

Students to pay less for LUC insurance | Loyola Phoenix

by Yara Shams
yshams@luc.edu

Health insurance will soon become more affordable for students on Loyola?s student health insurance plan, according to the Bursar.

This August, the university will switch student health insurance providers from UnitedHealthcare StudentResources to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBS), according to university Bursar John Campbell. Though plan coverage will remain essentially unchanged, the cost of the premium for the new plan will be $1,740 per year, which is $140 dollars cheaper than the current plan.
?We were looking at what is good for our students and trying to keep costs down,? said Campbell, who oversees the contracts for student health insurance. ?If we could have a reduction in health insurance costs when most insurance is going up, then that seemed like a good time to [switch to BCBS].?

Feeling that tuition and insurance fees are already too high, many students are excited about the reduction in health insurance costs.

?I think it?s great just because we?re constantly hearing about tuition is going up, so it?s nice to hear that something is going down,? said junior Becky Triyba, a 21-year-old biology major.

The BCBS plan will cover $5,000 of prescription drug costs per year, more than the UnitedHealthcare plan, which covered $3,000 for each insured student. The maximum amount the insurance will pay while the student is insured will also increase from $500,000 to an unlimited amount as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, health care reform legislation signed by President Barack Obama in 2010.

?I can?t see any downside for the students, which is nice,? Campbell said.

?It?s a win for the students, it?s a win for the university and it?s a win for Blue Cross Blue Shield, who wants to get back into the college healthcare plans,? Campbell said.

Campbell stated that he believes another major reason for the switch is that BCBS already has a strong connection with Loyola Hospital.

?The other piece of this is that Blue Cross Blue Shield has a solid working relationship with Loyola Hospital.?

Campbell added that BCBS has a great reputation as an insurance provider in the Midwest.
Loyola requires that all undergraduates enrolled in 12 or more credit hours and all graduate and professional students enrolled for eight or more credit hours have individual health insurance, either from Loyola or from an outside provider.

In the 2011-2012 academic year, 2,200 total students were insured by Loyola?s plan under UnitedHealthcare. Many opt out of Loyola?s plan because they are covered by their families? plans, which are typically more comprehensive than student health insurance plans, Campbell said. Illinois law states that students can be insured by their parents? insurance plan, if the plan covers dependents, until they are 26 years old.

A spokesperson for UnitedHealthcare said that though the company is all for making health insurance more affordable, it is disappointed with the switch.

?We have been proud of the role we?ve played in helping Loyola students stay healthy,? said Kevin Shermach, UnitedHealthcare?s director of public relations. ?We at UnitedHealthcare StudentResources are disappointed that the university has selected an alternate carrier for its student insurance plan.?

Interview with Sheila Hageman, author of Stripping Down | Single ...

Stripping Down, a brave memoir by ex-stripper turned mother and yoga instructor, was released last month by Seattle?s own Pink Fish Press. Pink Fish Press was founded by Renda Dodge and is co-operated by Senior Editor Sarah Martinez. It is a new independent press with hopes of distinguishing itself from other presses by the comprehensive help they offer their authors throughout the entire publishing and marketing process.

Stripping Down weaves Sheila?s past as a stripper, along with her more recent struggle with trying to balance mothering a small child while working and caring for her mother who was dying of cancer. What impressed me the most about Sheila?s story is her honesty. No topic is glossed over or left untouched. Along with stripping, she acted in some adult movies as well as had a brief stint as a dominatrix. Knowing she is a mother now, I could easily excuse her from failing to mention this in her memoir. But she doesn?t. Even better, she doesn?t glamorize her colored past nor is she merely trying to arouse and shock us, like so many current memoirs do. Instead of relying on titillation, she narrates her story with honesty and vulnerability. And she doesn?t solely reveal sexy, although perhaps controversial topics, she explores the mundane areas of life as well such as depression, fears about her parenting, and the doldrums that go along with motherhood and caretaking. This is what I look for in a memoir?a willingness to reveal oneself fully. Too many memoirs shy away from such well-rounded honesty and instead want to claim their life was extraordinary in how awful it was without ever making themselves vulnerable. In doing so, we can be shocked, horrified or amused by their story, but we don?t have any compassion nor care about the narrator, because they have not revealed themselves to the reader. As Jung says, ?That which is most personal is most common.?

After reading Stripping Down, I had so many questions about Sheila?s writing process and life in general. I emailed her for an interview and she readily agreed. She currently lives in Connecticut with her three children and husband. She?s always been a writer, but formalized this desire by receiving an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Hunter College, where she also graduated as valedictorian in January 2002. She teaches composition and creative writing through Hunter College, Housatonic Community College, Kaplan University and the College of New Rochelle. Sheila is also a certified and nationally registered yoga teacher.

CL: Were you already a mother when you decided to write about stripping? If so, did that weigh on your decision?

SH: I?ve been writing about stripping from the first time I danced when I was eighteen. Years later, when my daughter was one, I committed seriously to writing by going for my MFA in Creative Writing. I then knew I would be writing a memoir that had to do with stripping, but as I worked, I discovered the story involved much more.

I never worried about the fact that I was a mother or that I had a little girl. I?ve always felt comfortable about what I have done with my life, perhaps to the frustration of some people. I think having a baby girl was just more fuel for the desire to write my memoir because I want my daughter to be able to read honest stories of women?s lives, even when they involve ?unsavory? parts of me.

CL: Stripping Down not only reveals your past as a stripper, but also about infidelities, body issues, sexuality, cancer, and many other subjects people shy away from. What gives you courage to be so honest in your writing?

SH: I guess I have had this burning inside of me my whole life to be honest with the world. I took writing very seriously as a little girl; I had this feeling that being as honest as possible was the best way to reveal deeper truths. When I wrote about real life, people stopped and listened. It felt kind of like a magical power. If I told my experiences in story form, listeners seemed to understand me better. Perhaps because I was so shy talking to people, writing was my way of being heard, of feeling in control of my life and experience.

Since then, I?ve had this drive to be as honest as possible; I?ve always felt that if I speak the truth, people will care what I have to say. And there?s something more; it is cathartic to tell the truth. If there is nothing I need to hide, I will be free. No one will be able to hurt me.

CL: So many writers become blocked because they worry about what others will think of their story. Do you have a Phantom, as Virginia Woolf calls it, that you need to kill in order to write? Mine is my son?s teacher. I live in fear that she?ll read one of my articles that involves sex.

SH: I think my phantom is plural! They are my grown-up children. The way I?ve come to terms with my concerns about their reading my work, which I?m sure one day they will, is that it pushed me to raise them better and more consciously. It?s kind of like a challenge to raise them well-enough and open-minded enough that they won?t judge me.

Could that backfire on me? Sure. Maybe my kids will read my work and think I?m some horrible person, but I hope not. I can only hope that my honesty will make up for any embarrassment or anger that could arise from the people close to me.

It?s not so much my own stories I fear telling, it?s those of the people who are important to me. That?s the hardest part of writing memoir, having to weigh the benefits and risks involved in exposing others? ?secrets.? I never set out to hurt anyone, but at the same time how can I not talk about the people who affect my life, my story? I try to be as honest as possible while still honoring others? well-being.

CL: As an ex-stripper and now yoga teacher, how do you teach your children about their bodies and sexuality?

SH: I still think honesty is the best policy in these issues with kids, too. Of course, we take their level of understanding into account in everything, but it?s all just come naturally so far.

My husband and I are so comfortable with our own bodies so we hope to pass that on to our own kids by example. I?m always on guard for any discomfort from my daughter?she?s seven?but so far, she?s shown no signs of wanting to be more private. And it hasn?t resulted in my kids wanting to walk around naked everywhere or anything. They?re just comfortable with how different bodies look.

We?re taking it as it comes and hoping to approach all the questions that arise as honestly as possible.

CL: What was the worst criticism someone said or emailed you? How did you respond?

SH: Yes, I?ve been criticized for what I did, but I don?t think any of the external criticism ever could match the self-criticism I wallowed in for years. It took me a long time to completely accept who I was and that all the things I did, even the things that were clearly mistakes, made me who I am today.

I don?t think there?s anything anyone could say that would bother me now, but that?s because I?ve come to acceptance. People may have different opinions, but this is me. And that was me. And I can?t change things from the past; I can just be the best person I can be now.

CL: How do you balance your writing, teaching, speaking, yoga practice, time for yourself and family?

SH: Balance is a daily task that I try to figure out and perfect, but to no success. Well, I suppose I am successful in that I can do many of the things I love in one day, but not every day.

There truly is no way for me to have it all every day in every way right now. So some things are sacrificed. I prioritize and get what I can get done during the day. And then there?s always the nighttime after the kids are in bed. My husband and I sit at our computers working late into the night.

It?s funny?when I was single I would waste hours a day on trivial things like watching television and I?d get nothing creative done. It seems the busier I am, the more productive I become; I think it?s because I understand the preciousness of every minute now.

I probably do need to slow down a bit though. I?ve lost most ?fun? time from my schedule. I need to find small ways to be kinder to myself and my own needs.

CL: What?s next for you?

SH: In the immediate, I am working to learn and apply everything I can about marketing and publicity for Stripping Down. I am really enjoying the process so far. It feels good to promote this book because I feel so proud of what I?ve accomplished. I feel like this is a story that so many women?and men?will be able to relate to on some level.

And I have about half-a-dozen other projects in the works, from a graphic memoir, to a poetry chapbook, to a romance novel. There is this urge in me to try all types of different media and genre to express the heart of memoir through.

I?d also like to teach more memoir workshops and encourage more people to express their pasts honestly, to at least set out on the journey of self-exploration and self-knowledge. If I can move a few people toward bravely mining their pasts for answers and the roots of their journeys in life so far, I will feel I?ve done some good in the world.

Black staff: Black school superintendent is racist

Nine employees of the Tukwila School District have filed complaints of racial discrimination against their superintendent, Ethelda Burke.

Their attorney filed the complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

They each have a story about the comments they've endured. They range from vice principals, to teachers, to dispatchers.

"She said to me you have to stop being a big, black man scaring our white drivers," says Doc Fells, driver trainer and dispatcher for the district. "And it numbed me."

A group of female staffers at Showalter Middle School says their superintendent once referred to them as slaves.

"I was pissed," says Marva Harris, school security officer.

"I couldn't believe my ears she would refer to professional African-American women as slaves," says teacher Sandra Goins.

J.D. Hill, athletic director and head of transportation, says Burke had a nickname for him.

"When I walked into her office she said 'Hey, J-Dark, how are you doing?' J-Dark was my name for Ethelda, my pet name for a month, in a professional environment," says Hill.

It's hard to imagine, especially in Tukwila, which has been recognized as the most diverse school in the country. Seventy percent of the kids are non-white.

But the allegations are even more shocking because Burke is black herself.

"You want to celebrate her," says Hill.

It wasn't until coworkers started talking to each other that they realized there was a widespread problem. And they admit their superintendent's race made them reluctant to put a stop to it.

"For me, I feel a sense of betrayal," says Harris. "That I'm betraying her, because she's a black woman."

"If she wasn't a person of color, me personally, I would have gone after her long before now," says Ritchie Coleman, a bus driver.

The district, the superintendent, and the board declined to comment citing personnel issues.

Burke came to the district in 2007 from Tacoma.

Joan Mell, the attorney representing the employees has written a letter asking the board for Burke's immediate suspension.

Physicists Discover Evolutionary Laws of Language

Speaking as a linguist (working on my Ph.D.) this is something of a tempest in a tea-pot. The most relevant use would be for glottochronology [wikipedia.org] - a field that's largely been abandoned by anyone seriously working on historical linguistics because of the various problems involved with that approach, including what the authors of the paper find, that the rate of word loss is not constant over time. They have a better idea of the rate of word loss, which could help improve glottochronology, but the method has a lot of flaws regardless.

Also, the question they're asking - how do words change over time, in terms of coining, becoming current, and becoming obsolete - really isn't a question historical linguists are that concerned about. Historical linguists are much more interested in how the forms of words change over time (phonological change), or how their function changes over time (grammaticalization), whereas the coinage and loss of words isn't often so important, especially on the large scale statistical level. Furthermore, this type of model probably handles languages with phenomena like avoidance speech [wikipedia.org] poorly, since that would change how and why words are kept or lost.

Their language sample is at heart a convenience sample - they happened to have access to lots of data in those three languages, and it is largely written data. Spanish and English are both related languages with very similar cultural contexts, while Hebrew is a strange choice in that is has an ancient history, but only quite recent revitalised usage. Whether most spoken interaction (which is what linguists tend to be more interested in) has even a tiny subset of the total number of words they are talking about is an open question and would be better tested against corpora with a large quantity of spoken data such as the British National Corpus or the International Corpus of English.

It's an interesting study, but if it hadn't been written by physicists I'm not sure if it would have ended up in Diachronica or the Journal of Historical Lingiustics, much less Science. Their "statistical rules" are interesting, but really not of any great use to wider linguistic inquiry. I think its import is really just exaggerated by the fact that science editors read Science and NOT most linguistics journals, and therefore they think it's really impressive.

Bankruptcy on Student Loans | Finance World

Mar 19 2012

Most people get through with education with the help of loans especially when looking to get further education, say like at the university level. In the long run, it could prove to be difficult to pay up the student loan offered to you. When faced with such a situation, it is common for most people to seek bankruptcy claim as a way of shielding themselves from the possible outcomes.

However, it is important to know that student loans are not dischargeable even in the cases of bankruptcy. Student loans with government backing or nonprofit organizations backing have to be paid back in full whether you are in a position to do so or not. This therefore rules out a bankruptcy claim as a solution to your student loan problems.

The only way you can have your claim accepted is if you are in a position to prove extreme difficulty in paying up the loan which is hard to do. To do so, you might be required to prove that you are unable to keep up with the set payment schedule for your loan, that in future you have no hope of paying up the loan meaning that the current financial situation is definitely permanent. You also have to prove that you have done your best in trying to pay up but have failed.

Proving the above is what proves to be difficult for most people, therefore making it irrelevant to even try out a bankruptcy case on your student loan. It is virtually impossible to prove that your current financial position is permanent since even though you could be unemployed, it does not necessarily mean that you will not find great opportunities in the future. This makes it better for you to forget the possibility of having a bankruptcy claim work to your advantage since it is certain that it will not.

To get your student loan discharged, you can turn to other available solutions that could be of help in your situation. There are credit agencies that specialize in advising people faced with bankruptcy on the various options available for them to get off their financial woes. It is likely that you will find something that will work to your advantage in the counseling session bringing you relief.

Organizational Networks, Relationships & Sensemaking ...

In organizational life there are interpersonal networks, within and across organizations, and interorganizational networks, with exchanges of resources, alliances, and shared directors. Network thinking has a long history in sociology , such as the dynamics of triads and the ?web of group affiliations.? New constructs such as resources dependence, institutional theory methodology, and computer power encouraged formal methods for network analysis, assessing relationships and structures, and testing new theories.

Networks provide a way to visualize and analyze patterns among relationships of the nodes (parts) and ties to determine distribution of information, resources, energy and authority. This type of network analysis has lead to further review of organization connectedness, including:

  • formal and informal networks among members and units
  • social network analysis to quantify position or importance of actors in the network
  • characterization of technology, industry and product space
  • types of ties among organizations
  • organizational alliances, partnerships & affiliations
  • review networks of organization distinct from functional, divisional or matrix form
  • hybrid of ties among organizational units
  • dynamic networks in industrial districts
  • networks structures and differences depending on economies and politics
  • cross-cultural comparisons of networks

?Practical applications for organizational networks and relationships include application of the following steps for both individuals and organizations:

  1. Setting up a personal learning network (PLN) - developing a PLN to meet your personal and professional goals
  2. Establishing a professional presence online -establishing you digital identity and presences online
  3. Selecting online networks & tools - where to start, tools, tips and social spaces
  4. Finding your voice ? developing a sense of self in the community of practice and contributing to that shared community
  5. Network collaboration ? being able to weave your online network to learn, grow, curate and contribute

Type 2 Diabetes | Health and Fitness

Cinnamon stimulates the production of glucose burning-enzymes and increases the effectiveness of insulin, according to the USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland, USA. Emerging research on cinnamon shows it could become a good treatment for Type 2 diabetes, perhaps acting like insulin or increasing insulin?s effectiveness according to researchers in the Faculty of Health and Human Science, Thames Valley University in London, UK. The results of their study were published in the journal Diabetic Medicine in October 2011.

This particular study looked at the effect on cinnamon on the blood sugar of 58 people ranging in age from 45 to 64 and diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. All the participants were being treated with oral anti-diabetes drugs and had HbA1c levels of more than 7 per cent, indicating their blood sugar levels were not well controlled on medications. The participants were given either:

  • 2 grams of cinnamon, or
  • a placebo,

?daily for 12 weeks.

The volunteers in the cinnamon group showed reduced levels of their HbA1c, while those in the placebo group did not. Blood pressure readings were also reduced only in the cinnamon group. There were slight reductions in fasting blood sugar, waist measurement and the body mass index (BMI) in the cinnamon group, but the differences were not statistically significant.

From these results it was concluded cinnamon might be used as a type of dietary supplement to aid in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes not well controlled with medications.

The results were consistent with a study published in September and October of 2009 in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine. One hundred and nine Type 2 diabetics with HbA1c levels of 7 per cent or more were given either:

  • their usual care only, or
  • their usual care plus 1 gram of cinnamon per day for 90 days.

At the end of the study those in the cinnamon group had lowered their blood sugar levels significantly more than the diabetics receiving only their usual care. The author of this study, a resident doctor at the Mike O?Callaghan Federal Hospital in Las Vegas, USA, concluded cinnamon could be useful for lowering blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes, along with their usual care.

Uganda gay activists sue US pastor

Ugandan gay rights activists have sued a US pastor, accusing him of contributing to a campaign to persecute homosexuals in the east African country, an activist said Friday.

Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) filed suit against Scott Lively of the Abiding Truth Ministries on Wednesday at a Massachusetts court, claiming he pushed Ugandan officials to crack down on homosexuals.

"We are suing him for conspiring with Ugandan officials to draw up anti-homosexual legislation and for spreading propaganda that led to (gay) people suffering harassment and violence," said SMUG director Frank Mugisha.

The suit was filed on behalf of SMUG by the US-based Center for Constitutional Rights under the Alien Tort Claims Act, a statute in US law that allows Americans or people with a link to the US to be sued in a US court for crimes allegedly committed elsewhere.

The complaint names David Bahati, the Ugandan lawmaker behind a controversial anti-gay bill calling for draconian penalties against homosexuals, and former ethics minister James Buturo as some of those in Uganda who conspired with Lively.

Lively, the author of the book "The Pink Swastika", which details claims of widespread homosexuality in the Nazi party, was one of a number of US preachers who addressed a 2009 anti-gay conference in Uganda shortly before Bahati's bill was introduced.

"He was the main speaker at the conference and he said there was a gay agenda to recruit children and promote gay lifestyles to undermine traditional African family values," Mugisha said.

The anti-gay bill was recently reintroduced to parliament after lawmakers failed to discuss it during the legislative body's last session, but the bill's sponsor says he intends to drop the death penalty for some homosexual acts.

The Necessity of Continuous Sales Training | eVirtual Sales Force

Follow Me on Pinterest Massive Sales Results @ 1/2 the investment

Download HubSpot?s free eBook, ?The Ultimate How-To Marketing Guide?, and amplify your marketing!

The prosperity and popularity of successful companies is obviously the result of continuous training. Without proper sales training, a business is unable to stand out from the rest, thus having poor exposure and low credibility on the market. In order to achieve and maintain the success of their companies, business owners need to make sure that all their team members benefit from frequent sales training. While a short sales training course or seminary can familiarize your sales staff with the fundamentals of sales, the long-term success of your business can only be achieved through the means of ongoing sales training. Ongoing sales training is vital for maintaining the pace with other businesses in your branch and it can also help your company to get ahead of the competition.

Ongoing sales training programs are very important for any business, as they can help salespeople to maintain a good level of sales performance. It is important to note that the great majority of salespeople only improve their selling performance at first, being unable to progress further without frequent sales training interventions. Considering the fact that marketing and sales are a marathon, not a sprint, it is vital to frequently intervene with new, effective sales training solutions among the members of your business.

Proper sales training programs work on multiple levels: they provide the members of your business team with the latest marketing solutions and strategies, strengthen the relationships between the members of your team and also boost the morale and the motivation of your entire sales staff. An effective sales training program can have a very refreshing effect on the entire business, announcing a new stage in the activity of the company.

There are two main categories of sales training: self-study oriented sales training, which allows the trainees to learn on their own and trainer-oriented sales training, taught by a sales ?coach?. The first category of sales training includes multimedia training, tradebooks and textbooks that contain various selling techniques and strategies. Trainer-oriented sales training includes programs that involve active participation to courses, seminaries or laboratories. In contrast with self-study oriented sales training materials, trainer-oriented sales training programs are by far the best means of acquiring a wide range of skills and abilities that can considerably increase the sales efficiency of your business.

Trainer-oriented sales training programs have the advantage of offering trainees the chance to engage in role play situations, thus allowing attendants to quickly polish their skills. During the entire program, the trainees are encouraged to express their opinions and ideas, being provided with proper feed-back from their trainers. Trainer-oriented sales training programs can effectively improve the skills and abilities of your business team members, thus enhancing the overall performance of your company.

3rd Pillar Revealed

A HUGE Event is happening right NOW, but let me first talk about the 3 Pillars.

The 3 Pillars of effective SEO (that works):

a) On-page SEO

b) Off-page SEO (backlinking)

c) Social Signals Optimization

We know about on-page and off-page very well. But have you started

working on optimizing your Social Signals?

Google has confirmed that they are tracking and picking up collective information

about a site?s social presences. They termed this ?Social Signals?.

In other words, a site with great social signals tends to rank higher.

Daniel has tested this a lot and it is right. The better your social signals are, the

higher your site will rank.

Daniel?s tests on a network of 2,000+ sites (by turning REDS to GREENS):

- Top 10% of the sites show up to 360% more traffic, 410% more keywords ranked

into first page of Google and 310% more revenues!

I have ?turning REDS to GREENS? bold. Yep, that?s the Social Signal Analytics Plugin

that Daniel is going to release tomorrow! We have been using this plugin to track our

social signals. It shows RED when we are not doing well, and gradually turning GREEN

when we are getting better. At the same time, we see improvement in traffic, ranking and revenues!

If you want to manage your social signals, first, you need to measure them! And that?s

what you are getting tomorrow! A great plugin that will track your Social Signals the

way Google?s tracking them! I think you need to know about this!

The plugin is LIVE NOW as a special offer. Yes, special in it?s price!

So much cheaper than what it will be after this! So get ready tomorrow to grab the special

?LOW? price. Daniel told me the price is going to increase eventually, so be sure to grab it early!

Thank you,

John Krol
